ince 1984 the HCG has promoted
calligraphy and related book arts in the greater Houston area. HCG is part of an
international network of calligraphic societies, and our purpose is to promote and
encourage the fine art of lettering through educational programs, workshops,
exhibitions, and community involvement. HCG is a non-profit organization, open to anyone
interested in calligraphy, whether teacher, professional, hobbyist, or simply an admirer
of calligraphy. |

alligraphy is the art of
creating letter forms using many different tools and materials. Calligraphers use not only
pens and ink, but also brushes, markers, gouache, watercolor, colored pencils, pastels,
gold leaf, and more. You might even find some using found objects such as sticks and
cut-up soda cans to write with! |
 |
ich in heritage, calligraphy
is much more than writing a gothic-looking alphabet with a funny-looking
fountain pen. Even though we all know our ABCs and have been writing since childhood,
calligraphic expertise doesnt come overnight. HCG helps members pursue an education
in fine lettering, as well as color theory, layout & design, illumination,
bookbinding, papermaking, printmaking, drawing, watercolor, and decorative paper
techniques. |
 |
n-depth workshops taught by
nationally- and internationally-known teachers and master scribes provide training in both
historic and contemporary lettering styles and techniques. Only through formal study and
training does a calligrapher come to understand and master the techniques of the past. |
 |
ooks and videos from our
extensive (and continually growing) library are available for members to check out during
HCG meetings. Our collection includes hundreds of titles, including hard-to-find
resources. |
 |
xhibitions scheduled several
times per year showcase members artwork and provide an educational forum for the
public. All members are encouraged to participate in exhibitions, whatever their level of
expertise. |
